Inherited jewellery is often the most cherished and treasured of our possessions. Jewellery is personal in a way that few other things are- we wear it on our person, often for many years.

So it is unsurprising that it strikes an emotional chord when jewellery is inherited from someone significant in our lives.

Reinvigorate

A strong but intangible thread is unquestionably created when jewellery is passed from one person to another.

It’s a connection which seemingly continues to bind us. It is not uncommon for clients to become radiant when discussing a piece of jewellery, or conversely tearful.

Almost every piece tells a story and speaks of the person who wore it. We intrinsically understand this bond, as is evidenced by a sense of inconsolable despair in the event of its loss.

There are many ways to breathe new life into these heirlooms and enable them to continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

Restore

Pieces often exhibit damage or substantial signs of wear and tear after years of use, which if unaddressed, will ultimately lead to the loss of stones or the piece itself. At the very least, it is advisable to have settings checked to safeguard and secure stones. Ensuring that ring sizes have been adjusted is also prudent.

The surfaces of stones are often dull due to excessive abrasion, or stone edges scratched or chipped. It is possible to have the surfaces repolished to return them to their original splendour, restoring lustre to the facets which can yield breathtaking results.

Re-imagine

It is not unusual for clients to inherit jewellery which has enormous sentimental value, but the style of the piece, whilst being reminiscent of its previous owner, is so far removed from their own jewellery style that the tendency is not to wear it. This can present a conundrum, but also create an opportunity. With a little ingenuity and creativity, the piece can be re-set to retain the essence of the benefactor, whilst also integrating a sense of you.

If not re-modelled, the vast majority of jewellery which falls into this category goes largely unworn and sits in a safe or drawer… Far better to reinvigorate it with a new setting, so that it can be worn , loved and admired. As it was intended to be.

Renew

Jewellery worn regularly needs to be checked periodically to ensure that settings are secure. It is extremely common for stones to be lost due to damaged settings. An excellent example to illustrate this is a recent commission to replace a lost ruby from an engagement ring.

A client contacted Jacqui with a picture of her ring with a missing centre stone.

A client contacted Jacqui with a picture of her ring with a missing centre stone.

Replace

An inspection of the setting revealed missing and damaged claws which had ultimately led to the loss of the ruby, and the remaining diamonds were precariously loose. Furthermore, the base of the collets were extremely worn due to daily rubbing against the wedding band necessitating a complete replacement of the heads to assure the future security of the stones.

A number of rubies were sourced which featured similar properties and qualities as the original gemstone. Jacqui guided the client through the various options so that she could make an informed decision.

The final step was to finalise the design of the setting and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) was instrumental in providing clarity to the decision making process. These digital images are an excellent way to illustrate to scale exactly how the piece will look once complete – this visual communication is completely transparent and ensures that clients are clear on the final appearance before authorising production.

In this particular scenario, the client’s initial instinct was to replicate the original setting, however when reviewing CAD images and presented with more contemporary alternatives, she opted for something more streamlined.

Reacquaint

Once the final design had been agreed, production commenced, and four weeks later the ring was complete.
