Responsibly Sourced

All elements of jewellery are essentially gifts from our planet- be it precious metals, gemstones or organic gem materials. A substantial proportion of these materials are recovered by artisanal miners, who lead a largely hand to mouth existence with few measures to safeguard their well being or the environment.

Fairtrade and “Responsibly Sourced” initiatives aim to create a framework where miners can work safely, employing practises which respect the environment and in return be appropriately rewarded.

What Is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is a certification process which aims to address a number of key areas which includes mandatory health and safety regulations and protective equipment; education and training to abolish or reduce the use of toxic chemicals and the prohibition of child labour. Measures are also in place to ensure that precious materials are not being used to fund conflict or human rights abuses. Compliance is checked by regular reviews and audits.

This is a mutually beneficial arrangement- in return for complying with the fairtrade mandate, the miners receive a fair and reliable income, including a premium which they can invest in a variety of ways to improve the future of their local communities. This typically includes building essential infrastructure such as schools, hospitals or access to drinkable water.

Other investment has included improved mining equipment such as centrifuge machines, which enables the separation of gold without the use of chemicals in a more time efficient manner.

Accountability and Traceability

Fairtrade governs all steps in the supply chain, so also requires workshops which produce jewellery using Fairtrade Gold to comply with a range of criteria. They are also regularly audited to validate compliance.

All of these measures collectively aim to provide accountability and traceability from mining to refining to working precious metals and producing the finished pieces of jewellery.

Jewellery produced from Fairtrade Gold can be identified by the Fairtrade mark applied by an Assay Office which confirms that the piece complies with the Fairtrade Gold Standard.

Opportunity to Make a Difference

It is estimated that approximately 10% of the global gold supply and between 75-80% of gemstones are mined by artisanal miners, so there is significant opportunity to make a difference when incorporating responsibly sourced materials in jewellery.

Jacqui Larsson Fine Jewellery endorses these values and has established working relationships with operators who have been advocating responsible sourcing for many years. In some cases our counterparts control the entire supply chain so can provide assurance of provenance and compliance, thereby achieving the objectives of transparency and traceability in the supply chain and ultimately, appropriate disclosure.

The Kimberley Process Explained

Diamonds are governed by the Kimberley Process which is a self regulated certification scheme established in 2000 to prevent the proceeds of sales of rough diamonds being channelled to political regimes to finance conflict.

It is a mandatory requirement of the London Diamond Bourse that all members comply with the Kimberley Process. Consequently, you can buy with confidence knowing that all our diamond set jewellery meets these requirements.
