Lapis Lazuli & Diamond Sun Pendant Necklace

The sun is an enduring, uplifting symbol with universal appeal. This Lapis LazuliDiamond Sun Pendant Necklace is a welcome addition to any jewel box. Most cultures feature solar motifs, however, few worshipped the sun as a religion like the ancient Egyptians. Their reverence for the sun as a source of wisdom, light and life elevated it to a deity.

For modern-day sun seekers, you will have your own reasons to embrace the centre of our cosmos- heady beach holidays, nostalgic summer city breaks, or simply the beauty of a skilfully crafted piece of jewellery.

The centrepiece of the pendant is a glorious, uniquely coloured lapis lazuli disc featuring golden flecks of pyrite. This is encircled by diamonds and surrounded by radiating warm, golden rays. The chain is discreetly soldered to the sun, ensuring that the pendant is always visible, and that the clasp never rotates to the front.

An opaque stone prized for its intense ultra marine colour, lapis lazuli is one of the earliest known traded gems, and was known to have been traded as early as the second half of the 4th millennium BC… It features in some of the world’s most treasured relics, such as the magnificent mask of King Tutankhamun. Good quality lapis often contains tiny specks of brassy pyrite (fools gold). These little specks make lapis lazuli especially suitable for setting in yellow gold. Provided that they are not too prominent, these specks add texture and are valued as a sign that the stone is genuine.

The colour is so unusual, that lapis was ground to create pigment for paints, and during the Renaissance, this colour was often reserved for religious works due to its extreme cost. The mineral’s name is derived from the Persian word lazhward, meaning blue. Lapis has often been worn in the belief that it will protect the wearer from evil, hence its ubiquitous presence in the “evil eye”.

The best quality material has traditionally come from Afghanistan, which is the source for this piece.

Other similar pendants in our collection include the diamond pavé sun pendant necklace in two tone gold and the composite turquoise, diamond and white gold sun pendant necklace.

If you like your jewellery to have a little twist, the evil eye pendant featuring mother or pearl, lapis lazuli and diamond lashes is a witty take on a perennial favourite.

The rolo chain necklace has four adjustable lengths- 37.5cm at its shortest to 45cm at its longest. (The jump rings are set at 15″, 16″, 17″ and 18″). This simple feature provides welcome versatility to those who favour layering necklaces. The trick to effective layering is creating contrasts between size, shape and colour.
